I shared this fun project with the Modern Fabric Group Therapy sewing club this month and I promised I would post a little tutorial to remind them of all the little details we discussed for this easy and super cute Valentine.
Here is a list of materials you will need:
Fabric: a variety of strips measuring 2" - 3" wide x @ 10" long
Pellon 809 Decor Bond Interfacing: 8" x 12"
Felt Scrap: 2"x2"
Ribbon: 20" length of 1/2" wide - I used Offray double satin ribbon
* I used card stock paper, but I am sure regular paper will work too.
Sewing machine, thread, scissors, iron, ironing surface, and a few pins
Step 1: Download Scrappyvalentine and print. Cut out heart
Step 2: Fold paper heart on dashed lines. The folds will be your sewing guides, so try to make your fold lines crisp. I tried my best. STEP 3: Sew fabric strips together using 1/4" seams. I like to press my seams open to eliminate unwanted bulk. My strip set measures 10" x 14". STEP 4: Press fusible side of Decor Bond to the wrong side of the fabric. Be cautious of your hot iron - you do not want it to come in contact with the fusible side if the Decor Bond. STEP 5: Place paper heart with printed side down on interfaced side of the fabric. Do NOT pin - you don't want pin holes on your paper. If you don't feel confident holding the paper in place while you sew, consider using a glue stick to keep the paper from sliding while you sew. I like to line up the top horizontal fold with a seam line - this keeps things straight and even, although that's not necessary. Stitch on all 4 fold lines, as shown: STEP 6: Sew around the heart - about 1/8 " from the paper edge. Backstitch to finish. STEP 7: Cut out fabric heart, using the paper as your guide. Be careful not to clip your stitches - you've worked too hard. STEP 8: Turn heart upside down, paper side up - as shown. Cut out heart shape from your felt scrap and place in the rectangle area. Stitch down the center of the heart to secure. STEP 9: Place the center of your ribbon on the fabric side of your heart directly over the stitch line of your felt heart. Pin in place. Flip the heart over and stitch over the same stitch line in the center of the felt heart. I tried to attach the felt heart and the ribbon at the same time, but it didn't work out very well. STEP 10: Write a little Valentine sentiment. I added dashed lines around my heart. STEP 11: Fold sides as shown. I am using my scissors to keep it folded while I snap the photo.
STEP 12: Fold the bottom as shown.. Now you can see how this is transforming into an envelope ~ very exciting! Fold the top down, wrap the ribbon around and tie a pretty bow. Mission complete. This Valentine is the perfect size for a gift card too! I hope you have enjoyed this project. Send me pictures of your Valentines ~ I'd love to see what you make. Oh, and I am sure you are impressed with my lovely photography. Definitely an area that needs improvement. I will add that to the list. Have a wonderful weekend. Love, Karen ox
